San Antonio’s public transportation system, VIA Metropolitan Transit, is making strides towards inclusivity with the implementation of QR codes at bus stops. This innovative approach empowers visually impaired riders, along with those with low vision and non-English speakers, to navigate the city’s bus network with greater independence.
The initiative utilizes NaviLens, a specialized QR code system designed for accessibility. These unique codes can be scanned by smartphone cameras in any lighting condition, even without precise focusing. Remarkably, NaviLens can even function when a user is unaware they’re near a code, offering a user-friendly experience.
The program began with a successful pilot in 2021, strategically placing 100 NaviLens codes at San Antonio’s most frequented bus stops. The positive outcomes spurred VIA to expand the program, with plans to equip all 6,000+ bus stops within the next year.
This project reflects VIA’s commitment to providing equitable transportation options. Trustee Athalie Malone, a champion for improved resources for visually impaired commuters since joining the board in 2019, played a key role in advocating for this initiative.
The San Antonio initiative, with the support of Congressman Joaquin Castro who secured congressional funding for the technology in 2022, serves as a model for other cities seeking to enhance accessibility on public transportation. By embracing innovative solutions like NaviLens QR codes, San Antonio is fostering a more inclusive and independent commuting experience for all.
